My name is Kirsty Nicholls, and I’m an experienced journalist and Digital Mum in Edinburgh.
My career started when I trained as a Broadcast Journalist and became an investigative producer with ITV and later the BBC. I have worked in both current affairs and news, as a producer both on location and in a studio for live programmes. I have also worked as an on-screen reporter for both ITV and the BBC. Whilst with the BBC, I specialised in producing and directing social observational documentaries, filming my own material. I have won numerous awards for my films, including ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Best Documentary’ at the EDF Television Awards and ‘Best Documentary’ at the National Business Journalism awards.
I started to work for Swift Films in January 2014, based in their Edinburgh office. Swift Films is a multi award-winning film and television production company which splits its time between making factual programmes for broadcasters and producing films for businesses and organisations.
After working on a host of marketing projects for Swift Films, I discovered a real passion for creating compelling written content, and began to specialise in social media curation and content creation. In 2014 I became a mum and embarked on an exciting role as Editor for Edinburgh for Under Fives for the next 3 years. This is a guidebook, website and collection of social media groups and pages for families in Edinburgh. I started a column for MADE Magazine (Mums and Dads Edinburgh) and began regularly contributing to the website WOW 24/7 with tips for family activities in Edinburgh. I helped to launch the Bubele family listings and reviews app in Edinburgh as its editor, and worked as a writer and editor for numerous small businesses and organisations.
It was both a seamless and exciting move when I embarked on the Digital Mums Social Media Marketing Programme, a very detailed and hands-on course focusing on social media campaign management. While running a live campaign for The Dandelion Den – a fabulous online retailer – I developed a passion for producing social media campaigns for SMEs (especially of the “mumpreneur” variety!).
I now have a strong client base of wonderful business owners, whose brands and social media activity I’m as passionate about as they are. The Business Women Scotland Awards have recently announced that I am a finalist in their ‘Best Use of Social Media’ category, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
